Only a short drive from central Ohio, Holmes County offers so much to do and see for a quick weekend trip. We’ve given you some tips on hotspots when travelling with the kids, but if you’re looking for an adult-only adventure, Ohio’s Amish Country offers some wonderful options for visiting wineries and cheese houses.
Here are some of our favorites:
Breitenbach Winery: One of Ohio’s largest wineries, Breitenbach produces of an extensive array of award-winning grape, fresh fruit, and berry wines. They are particularly known for their unique dandelion wine and are hosting the 2014 Dandelion Festival on May 2-3.
Ravens Glenn Winery: Located on the banks of the Tuscarawas river, this beautiful winery produces a wide selection of varietals and has a full-service restaurant.
The Winery at Perennial Vineyards: Producing Vidal blanc, Chambourcin, Vignole, Chancellor, Chardonnay & Cabernet franc, The Winery also offers tours of the 1854 post & beam structure that houses production.
Swiss Heritage Winery and Broad Run Cheesehouse: All wines and cheeses are made on-site at Swiss Heritage—which is conveniently located just down the road from Breitenbach Winery.
Heini’s Cheese Chalet: Founded in the 1920’s by a master cheesemaker from Switzerland, Heini’s offers free tours daily. Monday, Tuesday, Thursday or Friday between 9:30-11:45am is the optimal time for a visit, so you can see the complete 11-step cheese making process.
This is far from a complete list of wineries and cheese houses in Holmes County; Amish Country offers plentiful opportunities to explore!
