Is it time for the kids to go back to school yet? Anybody feel like it’s time for them to go back to school? Well…regardless of how you feel, summer is still looming ahead of us— so, if you’re looking for something to do with the kiddos, we wanted to recommend a few activities in Amish country that are affordable, fun and within easy reach of Central Ohio.
In a drive of a little under two hours (or approximately one children’s feature film on the DVD player in the van), you can be in Walnut Creek, Ohio, in the heart of Holmes County.
What to do
With a baby giraffe born May 16, The Farm at Walnut Creek is a must-visit in Amish Country if you have kids in tow. Call ahead to reserve a horse-drawn buggy tour of the farm’s 120 acres, which is home to over 500 animals, all of whom will be happy to visit with you as explore the grounds. Animals from six continents live on this working farm and depending on the season you may also see plowing, thrashing, canning, milking, quilting and baking. Other attractions include the working blacksmith, produce market, playground and tour of two authentic Amish farmhouses.
The Farm at Walnut Creek is open Monday-Saturday at 8:30am and closes one hour before sunset. Admission with the hour-long wagon ride is $16.75 for adults and $11.75 for seniors and children under 12. Call for information on group rates.

Where to eat
Lunch stop: Walnut Creek Cheese
Even the pickiest eater in your car will find something to enjoy at Walnut Creek Cheese. Known for deli meats, Ohio-made cheese and fresh baked goods, this once small roadside stand has evolved into a grocery and restaurant that has upwards of 20,000 visits from shoppers per month. Other highlights include the homemade custard, jerky and special spice blends; if you plan your visit on a Thursday, Friday or Saturday you can also sample dishes from their test kitchen as well as enjoy the regular menu fare. Walnut Creek Cheese is open Monday-Saturday from 8am-6pm; open ‘till 8pm on Fridays.
Photo-Op Stop: Stutzman’s Crossing
If you’re looking to try to snag that elusive shot of all your kids smiling at the camera or maybe even a whole family photograph, the covered bridge at Stutzman’s Crossing is the perfect combination of quaint, yet cool scenery. Located at the bottom of Olde Pump St., just east of Walnut Creek, Stutzman’s Crossing spans nearly 60 feet, with a 15-foot clearance and a width of 24 feet. It also includes a five-foot enclosed walkway for people to enjoy the scenery from inside as well as from outside.
We think this is a lovely little day trip—have you visited Amish country with your kids? Let us know what you enjoyed!
